5 Super Easy Tweaks To Fix Firefox 4 User Interface Annoyances

March 2011 seems to be looking good in history of browsers. Three major players of best browsers came with their most awaited versions in their history. First of all, Microsoft launched totally revamped version of Internet Explorer called Internet Explorer 9 with some great features and functionality, then Google updated Google Chrome to Google Chrome 11 with speeds enhancements and revamped settings page. And last but not the least, Mozilla released its new Firefox 4 to the public few days back.

Yesterday, I got a chance to download the new version of Firefox called Firefox 4 and must say Mozilla has put its best efforts to develop this version. Lot of goodies has been brought up in this version such as newly designed interface, speed enhancements, less clutter interface and much more.

Other than some regular changes in design and interface, new features like Panaroma view of your tab pages is brought to battle tab clutter by re-arranging your opened tabs in groups. Do not track feature also been introduced that allows you to block your browsing behavior to web pages asking for it.

Another new feature is Sync that allows synchronization of your local machine Firefox information to various platforms. These new features are really great when it comes to increase an experience of the end user. But, while putting their best effort in this latest version, some of the users told me that there are few quirks in Firefox 4‘s interface that made their experience annoying.

Yesterday, when I downloaded Firefox 4 and realized that they were right. There are surely a few quirks or we can say that using Firefox earlier version from so many years makes it somewhat difficult to work in newly designed Firefox.

However, you can easily solve these quirks by making some easy tweaks and tricks if you digg it deeply. If you are short of time, I am here with a detailed guide on tweaks to fix annoyances with Firefox 4′s new user interface.

1. Move tabs back to the bottom

Some of the users like that Firefox is in the same army of the browsers that features tabs-on-top while some don’t like it. If you are one who don’t like it, you can easily put tabs back to the bottom. See below :

Go to Options > Tabs on top and uncheck that box

2. Want to hide Google Search Box

What’s the reason by putting Google Search Box when address bar works fine in searching everything. It just works like Chrome unified address bar where you can put both web adress and search query. If you too want to get rid of Google Search box, see below :

Go to Options > Toolbar Layout and drag the Google search bar into the Customize window

3. Move the reload button back to its normal place

Although a good move by Firefox 4 to put reload button into the address bar that surely save some space. But, many of users don’t like it and some then could not find it in first glance. You can move the reload button back its to normal regular place. Basically, its a regular toolbar button that you can move around. You can place it before or just after the address bar or anywhere in the same line. See below how to do it :

Go to Options > Toolbar Layout and now its a regular reload and stop button, you can move and place at its normal place

4. Fix Blurry Fonts

There are some reports that Firefox 4 had some issues with the rendering fonts correctly. If you too annoyed by the Firefox 4 blurry fonts, just intall an add-on called Anti-Aliasing Tuner that allows you to trun on ClearType rendering for all fonts and fix the problem to some extent.

Go to this link and click on Download for Windows (yeah for windows only as for now)

5. Want to hide Add-on Bar

Chrome started it and every other browser is doing it. Firefox 4 had also implemented the same thing by hiding the status bar by default. But, when you install an add-on like Firebug, Adblock Plus or Xmarks it will come again because the default place for these add-ons buttons are on the status bar (called as Add-on bar). Personally, for me its totally waste of space and if you too want to hide it. See below :

Hit X on the left side or go to Options > Add-on bar and uncheck the box

These are the some easy ways that will help you to quickly get rid of the annoyances you faced with the Firefox 4 user interface. If you know any other tweak that can make user experience better, be kind and share with us in the comments section below.

  • The described way of hiding the Add-on Bar is all very well but every time you restart Firefox it pops back up again! What is needed is a way of preventing the Add-on Bar appearing at all. I have add-ons that place their icon on the Add-on Bar and have not been updated to eliminate this if you select to have the icon on the toolbar, as I have. I don’t want to disable these add-ons as they are very useful. I want a way to prevent the Add-on Bar appearing every time Firefox starts up, regardless of whether or not there are add-ons that put their icons there.

  • Now discovered the answer to this problem: as reported elsewhere a modified version of the Firefox userChrome.css file can be used to prevent the Add-on Bar being launched at Firefox restart. You can find a copy of this code in the file I have posted in my Public folder on Skydrive here: https://skydrive.live.com/?cid=8997700dc0fb2601&sc=documents&uc=1&id=8997700DC0FB2601%21119# This can be downloaded and installed in the Firefox profile chrome folder, alongside the two examples provided by Mozilla.

  • how many tabs can you have open with FF4 when I had it earlier it would only allow about 10 and then become very sluggish
