20+ Most Weird News Stories Of January 2011 That Will Leave You Amazed

In today’s technologically advanced world where we are surrounded with amazing gadgets that promise to keep us well connected with our loved ones, don’t you sometimes feel like you have no time to spend with yourself? Frankly speaking, sometimes, I feel like leaving aside all the gadgets I’m blessed with and go bag packing. Traveling around the world, a good novel in my hand, meeting new people, taking pictures has always been my dream. Somewhere deep inside I have that curiosity to know about various travel destinations, weird news stories, somewhat odd kinda festivals that take place around the globe, and what not.

In the quest to know about various odd happenings around the globe, I keep surfing the net. In between my hectic day’s schedule whenever I get time, I stumble around and while doing so I come across various odd news that sometimes make me smile and at other times leave me wide mouth opened.

Expect the unexpected! Somewhere long back I read this wonderful cite which actually fits the world which we live in. Surfing the net whole day, all you tech savvys surely come across innumerable odd stories, some weird news and much more. Correct me if I’m wrong!

How about checking out the weird news all under one roof? This article of mine is the first of its kind here on WebTabLab. I have jotted down 22 world’s most weird and strange news stories of Jan 2011.

1) Swedish patient swallows dentist’s drill

Oops! Swedish man accidentally swallowed part of a dentist’s drill while he was having a routine procedure on his teeth. The dentist noticed it and he along with his assistant tried to pluck it out but it was already in. The patient accidentally swallowed the metal attachment and soon after the bizarre mishap, he was rushed to the hospital for an X-ray and the missing part was located in the stomach of the patient which was expected to come out ‘the natural way’.

2) Crocodile gulps phone, starts ringing

The Ukraine woman, Rimma Golovko while on her trip to the Zoo accidently dropped her cell phone in a crocodile pen at an aquarium in the eastern city of Dnipropetrovsk. She stretched out her arm and tried to snap a photo of Gena opening his mouth and the phone slipped which then went into the crocodile’s stomach. The workers there didn’t believe her until the cell phone which was in Gena’s stomach started ringing which persuaded them to believe her.

3) 29-year-old set to become Britain’s youngest grandfather

The heading says it all. A 29 years old man is all set to become Britain’s youngest grandfather as his teenage daughter is expecting to give birth to a child later this year. He is soon-to-be record breaker has a 14-year-old daughter who is 11 weeks pregnant. The identity of this man is kept anonymous to protect his young daughter. Rumors are that the soon to be the world’s youngest granddad is bragging about “making a fortune” on selling his family’s story to a Sunday newspaper.

4) Fox Shoots Hunter With Gun In Belarus

Now this one actually left me dazed. Till date we have heard man shooting animals with gun but a fox has turned the table on a hunter in Belarus and shot a man with his gun before making his escape. The fox pulled the trigger of the man’s gun with its paw and wounded him in the leg. The 40-year-old hunter shot the fox from the distance and tried to kill the fox with the butt of his gun when the fox turned and shot him instead. The man was taken to hospital by his friends.

5) Taiwanese man sues neighbors over insulting bird

What if children in the neighborhood insult you? Fight or sue your neighbors to make their kids learn insulting words? Even in the worst scenario, you won’t sue the person, will you? The news reads-Taiwan based electrician, Wang Han-chin sued his five neighbors for training their mynah bird to insult him. He claims that the offensive bird curses at him, calling him a “clueless, big-mouthed idiot”, every morning as he leaves for work. The insulting words were not bearable to him and he filed the complaint to the police. He said that the insulting words caused him serious distress and was the cause of his loss of concentration at work resulting in burn injuries.

6) Dead Japanese father kept hidden in wardrobe for five years

Shocking or weird you decide! In Kyoto, Japan 55-year-old man did not open his mouth to reveal the death of his father and kept him stuffed in a wardrobe for five long years. The body of his father started to smell but he didn’t reveal the secret for the reason that he wanted to continuously receive government pension checks in his father’s name.

The case came into light when the man was admitted to hospital and his wife went in the apartment who noticed something suspicious. An investigation for this serious offence and fraud case is under way.

7) Drug-Smuggling pigeon captured carrying cocaine, marijuana to Colombia prisoners

Gone are the days when pigeons were used to send messages, now they are used for smuggling purpose. There seem to be the dearth of human beings for smuggling. What else could be the reason of using pigeon for drug smuggling? Or is it the safe medium? The news left many awe-struck when a drug-smuggling pigeon was captured outside a Colombian jail. Discovered by two police officers at a street away from Bucaramanga Prison, the criminal bird struggled to fly into the correctional facility with 1.6 ounces of marijuana strapped to its back in a white paper package. The pigeon was not able to fly due to overweight parcel on his back which was the reason it was caught easily.

8 ) Brazilian kept wife in cellar for 16 years

Joao Batista Groppo, the Brazilian man crossed all borders by keeping his wife locked in a squalid basement for 16 years while living with another woman in the same house. Sebastiana Aparecida Groppo, 64 was found in the cellar of the house in the city of Sorocaba in Sao Paulo state. Roughly measuring 130-square-foot, the cellar was littered with feces and dead cockroaches when Sorocaba police inspector Ana Luiza Salomone entered the house. The woman was found without clothes with just the blanket wrapped up. Sadistic but true, the news surely left millions dumb found.

9) 110-year-old man finds 82-year-old willing to be his wife

A 110-year-old Malaysian man wanted to marry and was looking for the partner and destiny favored him. Here I recall the famous quote- When you really want something, the whole universe conspires in helping you achieve it. He has finally got an 82-year-old woman who has responded to his call for a bride. Ahmad Mohamad Isa has 20 grandchildren and 40 great-grandchildren. He will marry the 82 year old Sanah Ahmad, a widow of 30 years and mother of nine. Actually, Ahmad’s four wives have died and he had now divorced the fifth one to be her partner. Amazing!

10) Shocked mother rejects alien like baby

Sonal Waghela from Gujarat, India delivered the child with a gargantuan, alien-like head weighing 2.15kg but refused to feed. She wasn’t willing to look at the child or name him for the matter of fact that he looked like an alien. The baby boy unfortunately is at great risk of death, especially within the first six months and to save him, brain surgery is needed.

11) Chinese men break record for standing in ice

Two Chinese men Chen Kecai, 52 and Jin Songhao, 54 have set a new world record for endurance by standing encased in ice for two long hours. Mr Chen lasted for 118 minutes, while Mr Jin lasted for 120 minutes. Earlier Wim Hof, a 51-year-old Dutch man in Hong Kong set the record of 115 minutes which was broken by these two ingenious people.

12) Italian man Shot in Head Sneezes out bullet; survives

Darco Sangermano, 28 was hit in the temple by the .22 calibre bullet which went through the right side of his head, behind his eye socket. Guess what? The guy was rushed to the hospital where he left the doctors amazed by sneezing out the bullet. Miraculously no serious damage has been caused.

13) Wheelchair bound man diagnoses spider bite after watching documentary

Brian Holman, 55 year wheelchair bound man had spent three and a half years unable to walk and facing the prospect of amputation unless he was finally cured after a television documentary about spiders revealed the cause of his condition. The man while watching the programme on the Discovery Channel in which a woman had suffered a similar fate noticed that she had been bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider, a small but poisonous spider found in Turkey and was cured.

14) Alive man receives his death certificate

All major newspapers read the same headline-Alive man receives his death certificate as if it has left all people shocked. A 70-year-old man, Noida Sector-22 resident received a photocopy of his death certificate by post at Chaura Raghunathpur area in Noida. The death certificate declared him dead as on August 18th, 2010.

15) Pigeons fetch auction record

At the Belgium auction, the racing pigeons were sold for more than one million euros. One of the pigeon named Blue Prince was sold out for 150,000 euros alone. In all, the world record breaking flock fetched a huge 1.4 million euros. The birds were being launched 1,000km above their loft and the first one to return was declared winner.

16) Chinese truck driver had a dramatic escape

A Chinese truck driver’s vehicle span out on the major road clipped the concrete wall and turned over the edge. The man cheated certain death in which single punctured tyre and some torn sheet metal near the diesel tank played the major role. The truck hanged on to the concrete barrier, albeit upside down. The truck plunged 200 feet into the gorge below in rural China. The rescuers risked their lives to save the life of the driver who could have died even if there was the minor mistake.

17) Meet Liang Yuxin, the Chinese vomit machine

Poised to become the Guinness World Record holder in coin swallowing, Liang Yuxin, a 25-year-old man from Xia Mei claims to swallow and vomiting. Confused? What this guy does to leave the people amazed is that he swallows the objects not meant to be taken in and the n vomits back. He had once swallowed the ball and vomited it back up through the power of sheer will. Don’t be mistaken that he doesn’t takes these things in. He actually does it. Utterly bizarre!

18) Philippines vice mayor photographs his own murderer

Philippine Councilman Reynaldo Dagsa of Barangay was shot dead on the New Year’s Eve when he was taking picture of his family outside his house in Manila. The most bizarre thing that had happened in the incident was that just few seconds before the man was shot, he took the last photo that captured the man who was aiming a gun from behind his smiling family.

Based on this, the Philippine police arrested the suspect. Dagsa family while going through the pictures noticed that the last photograph taken by Philippine captured the assassin.

19) Man admits mailing hundreds of tarantulas

A German national shipped hundreds of live tarantulas into the United States via mail. The 37-year-old Germany based Sven Koppler admitted that he mailed around 247 live tarantulas to federal agents in Los Angeles. Besides this, he admitted that he had sent the agents 22 Mexican red-kneed tarantulas which are a species of spider formally known as Brachypelma smithi. Koppler will face a maximum of 20 years in federal prison when he is sentenced on April 11. Bizarre and goose bumping!

20) Indian Bride Discovers Husband Is a Woman

Indian bride, Minati Khatua and her family were completely fooled by the groom, Sitakant Routray who was later discovered to be a ‘woman’. Substantial dowry was given which included Indica car, gold ornaments and US $ 575 in cash. After the marriage the girl got suspicious when he constantly avoided any physical contact with her using the pretext of a religious vow. One day when she to force open the bathroom door when he was having a bath and her worst fears became true. He (her husband) was a woman.

21) Love bite partially paralyzed a 44 years old woman

At the Christchurch Hospital, one of its kinds case was registered. A 44 years old Maori woman was hospitalized after experiencing loss of movement in her left arm and the reason is ‘Love Bite’. The clot that had gone through the woman’s heart and had resulted in a minor stroke that causes loss of movement in the left arm.

22) Save the planet: Eat bugs

Would you eat the bugs to save the rainforest, cut global carbon emissions? If Mealworm quiche, grasshopper springrolls and cuisine made from other creepy crawlies was the answer to the global food crisis, shrinking land and, climate-changing carbon emissions would you agree on this? A professor at Wageningen University in the Netherlands said insects have more protein than cattle per bite, cost less to raise, consume less water and don’t have much of a carbon footprint.

Duyugu Tatar, a 24-year old IT consultant who attended a recent lecture and food-tasting at the university eat the stuff made of bugs and said that the taste was not that awful. However, the idea of eating them horrified her. She further said that it was crispy not like normal food like meat, vegetable or fruit. It was more like cornflakes she said.
